If you’ve ever stared at your closet feeling overwhelmed—while simultaneously wrangling kids, prepping breakfast, and downing your first coffee, you’re not alone.
Now that my weekly routine has shifted from working from home to working out of the home, I can’t just rotate through the same four outfits anymore.
This spring, I decided to invest the time up front to make getting dressed feel effortless so I could feel confident and amazing in what I wear every day.
Here’s exactly how I built my Spring Capsule Wardrobe. Disclaimer: this exercise took 6 to 8 focused hours, but now, I can get ready in five minutes flat without a second thought (not to mention saved me hours of mindless shopping and dollars wasted on impulse buys).
Step 1: Curate inspiration
I started by following stylists and style-forward creators on Instagram. Instead of saving everything, I created one dedicated “Spring Style” folder. (Pinterest works too if that’s more your speed.)
Step 2: Build your visual closet
From there, I screenshot the outfits that made me feel excited to get dressed. I uploaded them into Canva, using a simple template I made to keep it organized. I’m sharing my Canva template here if you want to use it too.
Step 3: Narrow it down
After flooding my folder with inspiration, I gave myself a goal: Identify 7 to 10 outfits I want to recreate. Enough variety to stay inspired, but not so much that it felt overwhelming.
Step 4: Deconstruct the looks
I looked at each outfit and broke down the key components. Think: brown blazer, red tank, relaxed jeans, clean sneakers. I also began thinking through any supporting accessories - think bags, jewelry, a layering sweater. Then, I started building my list.
Step 5: Shop Your Closet First
Before sourcing anything new, I identified what I already owned that could recreate each outfit.
If I had it, I snapped a photo, found a similar image online, or pulled the exact item from a retailer’s site for visual purposes.
I added a checkmark over the product in my Canva template to note it’s already in my closet.
Only after that did I search for missing pieces—typing keywords into Google or using image search to find close matches. Once I found the item I wanted to purchase, I added a screenshot and link to my Canva project.
Step 6: Mix, match, reality check
Once I had my pieces laid out, I added extra blank slides to mix and match the items. If a piece didn’t fit easily into multiple outfits, I asked myself: Is this really something I should be buying? Alternatively, if I found a super high quality investment piece, this process validated if it was worth the splurge.
Sometimes the answer was yes. But often, it saved me from spending unnecessarily.
Step 7: Execute with intention
When I was confident in my capsule, I built my carts. Looking for promo codes, waiting for a weekend sale or swapping items from one retailer to the next to get free shipping. Once I purchased an item, I added a checkmark directly over it in my Canva template, keeping everything organized in one view.
Voila. Less decision fatigue. Fewer purchases. More mornings where I feel like me without the scramble.
