We spent a long weekend in Aix this past summer, and TBH I loved it more than Nice! It’s culturally-rich, lively, and has everything you need to live a vibrant summer abroad. It’s also just 45 minutes away from Cassis, which is one of the most stunning seaside towns I’ve ever been to.

Logistics: Getting There & Staying There

Ease of Getting There:

• Major Airport: Land at Marseille Provence Airport (MRS).

• Flights: There are seasonal direct flights from the East Coast, but most travelers connect through Paris (CDG) or London. Expect 1–2 stops from the West Coast.

• The Commute: The airport is about 25 minutes from Marseille and 30 minutes from Aix-en-Provence.

Getting Around: Stroller vs. Scooter Realism

• The Stroller: In Aix, the cobblestones are relatively smooth, but in Marseille’s older districts like Le Panier, there are constant stairs.

• Kid Scooters: Marseille’s Vieux Port (Old Port) and the Corniche are flat, paved, and perfect for scooters.

• The Car: Essential for Provence. Be prepared for very tight parking in city centers, look for “Parking Public” and be ready to pay for the convenience.

Housing:

• Marseille Housing: A 2-bedroom apartment in a family-friendly area like the 7th Arrondissement ranges from $3,000–$5,500/month in July.

• Aix-en-Provence Housing: For a more polished, walkable experience, focus on the streets surrounding Cours Mirabeau or the quieter Mazarin district. With a car, you can also explore the more rural houses for more space. Expect to pay between $3,500–$5,500/month in July.

• Pro tip: I highly recommend prioritizing a rental with a pool. The heat in July is intense, and having an immediate way for the kids to cool off in the afternoons will keep everyone happy.

The “American Reality” Check:

• Air Conditioning: Provence gets hot. You must verify that your rental has A/C, especially in Marseille where the stone buildings trap the heat.

• Sunday Closures: Except for a few tourist-heavy spots, Sunday is a ghost town for retail. Stock up on Saturday, or join the locals at the Sunday morning flower and food markets.

• Laundry: Standard European setup of a washer in the kitchen, but no dryer.

The Weather: What to Expect in July

• The Temperature: Dry and hot. Expect highs between 85°F and 92°F.

• The Evening Vibe: Perfection. The temperature drops just enough to be comfortable, and the “golden hour” in Provence lasts forever.

What to Eat:

• Navettes: Orange blossom-scented biscuits from Marseille. They are hard and boat-shaped; kids love dipping them in milk.

• Panisse: Chickpea flour fries. They are a Marseille staple and the ultimate kid-approved savory snack.

• Ratatouille: The classic summer stew. It’s the best way to get kids to eat Mediterranean produce.

• Rosé & Pastis: For the parents, a chilled glass of Provence Rosé or a cloud of water-diluted Pastis at 6:00 p.m. is the local law.

That is what makes Northern Italy feel so special. From the Dolomites to Lake Como to Milan, it offers a more livable summer with cooler temperatures and just as much charm.

The Dolomites are still at the very top of my personal list for living abroad in the summer. We tried to make it happen last year, but finding legitimate day camps for the kids and good housing options was surprisingly hard. That experience is a big part of why I started creating these guides and co-created Roam Collective, to make these kinds of stays feel more possible for families like ours.

This list is for anyone dreaming of an Italian summer that feels beautiful, inspiring, and actually doable with kids.

Logistics: Getting There & Staying There

Ease of Getting There:

• Major Airports: Land in Milan Malpensa (MXP) for the lakes/Dolomites, or Venice Marco Polo (VCE) for the eastern region.

• Flights: Several major U.S. cities offer seasonal non-stop flights to Milan and Venice, mostly from the East Coast. If you’re flying from the West Coast (Los Angeles, San Francisco, etc.), expect 1-2 stops.

• The Commute: Reaching the camp hubs varies. Milan is a 50-minute train from Malpensa. Padua and Venice camps are within 30-45 minutes of the VCE airport. For the Dolomites, expect a 2.5-hour drive from Venice or Milan.

• The Stroller: In cities like Milan or Padua, a standard stroller is fine. In Venice, strollers are a nightmare due to the endless bridges; baby-wearing is your only sane option.

• A Note on Venice Housing: Finding long-term stays on the island is a unique challenge; expect to pay a premium ($4,500–$7,000+) for a 2-bedroom. For better value and easier logistics, many families look at Giudecca (quieter/local) or Lido (beach access and actual space for kids to run).

The “American Reality” Check:

• Air Conditioning: More common in Milan and Genoa, but often non-existent in mountain chalets. Usually, the mountain air is enough, but always verify “Aria Condizionata” if you’re heat-sensitive.

• The Riposo: Shops and many restaurants close between 12:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. It is the mandatory Italian nap time.

• Laundry: Standalone dryers are very rare. You’ll be using the “stendino” (drying rack). In the dry mountain air, things dry fast!

The Weather: What to Expect in July

• The Temperature: In the cities and plains (Milan, Padua, Bologna), expect highs between 85°F and 90°F with higher humidity than the coast. In the Dolomites and Lake regions, the daytime is a perfect 75°F–80°F, though the mountain sun is incredibly intense.

• The Evening Vibe: City nights stay warm. In the mountains, the temperature drops quickly after sunset to the 50s or 60s.

• Risotto & Polenta: Northern Italy swaps heavy tomato sauces for creamy rice and cornmeal. Kids love the “simple” butter and parmesan versions, while parents can dive into the rich saffron-infused Risotto alla Milanese or mountain Polenta topped with melted fontina cheese.

• Cotoletta alla Milanese: The ultimate kid-friendly staple. It’s a thin, breaded, and pan-fried veal or chicken cutlet, essentially the world’s most elevated chicken finger.

While Southern Spain sounds dreamy, once you pair it with hundred-degree temperatures, you quickly realize it is too hot for the beaches to even be enjoyable or even to stand on the sand in the afternoons. You ultimately end up spending your days seeking A/C rather than soaking up the sun.

That is where Northern Spain comes in. The region offers much more moderate temperatures but just as much rich Spanish culture. While San Sebastián gets all the hype (which it certainly deserves), my research today is concentrated on options outside of this charming city.

• Major Airports: Land in Bilbao (BIO) for the Basque Country, or Santiago de Compostela (SCQ) for Galicia.

Athens, Greece is the first destination I’m publishing that I haven’t actually been to. And if I’m being honest, I have been to Greece, but my one-week spring break in Corfu as a study abroad student barely counts as “seeing Greece.”

That trip was booked for Easter week, which is when the island basically shuts down. Just one of many questionable travel decisions I made in my early twenties.

My one shining Greece moment was Easter lunch with a Greek family at their restaurant. My friend and I were wandering a quiet strip of closed spots, hungry and a little lost, when we stumbled on a family mid feast. Lamb, dishes everywhere, the best smells. I think they took pity on us and invited us to sit down and it was one of the best meals. True story, I swear.

So yes, Greece with our family is high on my bucket list.

And while the islands get all the glory, I was impressed by the camp options in the Athens Riviera and the coastal suburbs for a great summer routine with kids. You get ancient history, beach days, and a culture that truly treats kids like they belong.

One disclaimer if you’re West Coast based like me: the time zone is the hardest part. 9:00 a.m. PDT is 7:00 p.m. in Greece, so overlap can be brutal. But if you can swing the schedule, the payoff is huge.

• To the North: These are accessible via the Green Line (Metro Line 1) or a 20–30 minute Uber. Many families choose to stay in Kifisia or Halandri to be closer to these school-based camps.

Traveling to the Islands for a Weekend Getaway:

• By Ferry: Most ferries leave from Piraeus (central) or Rafina (closer to the airport/Artemida). Rafina is actually a better bet if you are staying near the coastal camps as it’s smaller and less chaotic.

• By Air: If heading to Crete or Rhodes, a 45-minute flight from ATH is often easier than a 6-hour ferry with kids.

Getting Around: Stroller and Scooters

• The Stroller Strategy: Bring an ultra-compact, one-hand fold model for quick taxi hops, but always keep a carrier handy. Strollers are prohibited on many ruins sites like the Acropolis. If you have a toddler, I highly recommend this toddler sling.

• Scooters: Leave these at home for the hilly, uneven city center and save them only for the flat, wide seaside promenades of the Athens Riviera or the SNFCC park.

• Taxis & Rideshare: Street taxis rarely carry car seats, so pack these compact portable car seat vests.

• Public Transit: Stick to the Metro for the best air conditioning and elevator access, or take the slow, scenic Coastal Tram for a smooth, stroller-friendly ride to the beach.

Cost of Living:

• Housing: A 2-bedroom apartment in a family-friendly area like Kifisia (upscale suburb) or Glyfada (beachfront) ranges from $3,000–$5,500/month in July.

The “American Reality” Check:

• Air Conditioning: This is a survival tool here. Most modern rentals have it, but verify it is in every bedroom, not just the living room.

• Laundry: Clothes dryers are nearly non-existent in Greek homes; instead, lean into the local way and use the drying rack to let the intense Mediterranean sun dry your clothes.

• The Afternoon “Siesta”: Between 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m., the country goes quiet. It is the best time for a family nap or a focused work block.

The Weather: What to Expect in July

• The Temperature: Expect consistent, intense heat with daily highs averaging between 90°F and 95°F, though frequent heatwaves can easily push temperatures into the low 100s.

• The Evening Vibe: As the sun dips, the temperature drops to 75°F, signaling the start of the Greek “second day.” The air becomes perfectly comfortable for outdoor dining and late-night strolls, with a nice coastal breeze.

The Greek Food Scene & Typical Schedule

What to Eat:

• Vegetables: July is the peak of the Greek tomato. Look for Gemista (tomatoes and peppers stuffed with rice and herbs) or Briam (a roasted vegetable medley).

• Fruit: Seek out Argos Melons (rugby-ball shaped and incredibly sweet) and Naoussa Peaches. In late August, keep an eye out for Royal Figs with their dark purple skin.

• Fritter Culture: Kids love Kolokithokeftedes (zucchini fritters) and Tomatokeftedes (tomato fritters). They are essentially crispy, savory snacks that work for any meal.

• The Wine Scene: For hot afternoons, skip the heavy reds and look for Assyrtiko (crisp and mineral) or Moschofilero (floral and dry). If you want something traditional, try a high-quality Retsina served ice-cold.

Typical Eating Schedule:

• Lunch 1:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. This is the big, lingering meal of the day followed by a rest.

• The Evening Coffee: Around 6:00 p.m. Locals often grab a Freddo Espresso to fuel up for the long night ahead.

• Dinner: 9:00 p.m. – 10:30 p.m. Tavernas don’t truly vibe up until late. If you have younger kids, look for “Tascas” or tavernas with outdoor play areas.

Things to Do With Kids

• The Hellenic Cosmos: An interactive museum with virtual reality tours of ancient Greece.

• The Beaches: For calm, toddler-friendly water, head to Varkiza Resort (Yabanaki) or Lagonisi Beach. Both have soft sand and shallow entries. Artemida is also great for shallow water but has a much more local, laid-back vibe.

• The Water Parks: Aquapolis (next to the Attica Zoo in Spata) is the newest and most convenient. For a massive day trip, Splash Waterpark Isthmos (near Corinth) is about 40 minutes from Athens and has huge slides for big kids.

• Farms & Feta: Visit Kostarelos Cheese Factory in Markopoulo. They’ve been making barrel-aged feta since the ‘30s. While it’s more of a production facility/shop, they have a “gastronomic center” where you can see the process and eat the freshest yogurt and cheese imaginable.

• Cooking Classes: Kids Love Greece organizes family-friendly classes that start with a market tour and end with the kids making their own tzatziki and pita.

• Flisvos Marina: A massive pedestrian area with playgrounds, cafes, and great people-watching.

• Lake Vouliagmeni: A natural thermal lake that is calm and shallow, perfect for a relaxed family swim.

• Outdoor Cinemas: A quintessential Greek summer experience. Most gardens show English movies with Greek subtitles.

• Day Trip to Aegina: A 40-minute boat ride. Buy the local pistachios at the port and visit the Temple of Aphaia.

Things to Do Without Kids

• The Rooftop Bars of Monastiraki: Grab a cocktail for a view of the Acropolis that is truly breathtaking.

• Wine & Olives: Take a private tour of the Mesogaia Valley (right near the airport/Koropi). Wineries like Papagiannakos are bioclimatic masterpieces. Pair this with an olive oil tasting at Maison d’Olive in the city for a high-end “adult” afternoon.

• Boat Days: Charter a private rib boat from Vouliagmeni to explore the hidden coves or sail out to the uninhabited Moni Island for turquoise water snorkeling.

In the summer of 2024, our family spent 9 weeks living in Sintra, a quaint fairytale-like town about 30 minutes from Lisbon. This wasn’t just a long vacation, it was a full-life relocation. The kids went to summer camp, Jason and I worked, we hiked the Sintra hills, explored the coast, enjoyed vibrant days in Lisbon, and really felt like we were living abroad. There are so many sites to see, day-trips and weekend trips from the south in the Algarve, to farther north in Porto.

Portugal is magic. It’s affordable, the people are kind, the food is incredible and it has undeniable natural beauty that makes it feel like a true reset. Whether you’re looking at the city of Lisbon or the coastal charm of Cascais (my fav. beachside town), here is how to operationalize your Portuguese summer.

Logistics: Getting There & Staying There

Ease of Getting There:

• Major Airports: Land at Lisbon (LIS) or Porto (OPO)

• Flights: Direct flights are standard to Lisbon from major U.S. hubs like New York, Boston, and even San Francisco, typically taking between 7 to 11 hours. TAP is the national airline, and very reasonably priced.

• The Commute: The Lisbon airport is very central. A taxi or Uber/Grab to the city center takes 15–25 minutes (€15–€25)

Getting Around: Stroller vs. Scooter Realism

• Uber & Grab: Uber is incredibly affordable and reliable here, and Grab is even cheaper. It’s often cheaper than taking the whole family on public transit. We packed these compact portable car seat vests for Caden and Willow. They are a must-have in Portugal.

• Skip the Scooters: Between the steep hills and the tiled sidewalks, scooters are more of a hazard than a help.

• The Stroller Strategy: You need a stroller with great suspension for the cobblestones. If you’re in Lisbon, baby-wearing is easier for the steepest neighborhoods. If you have a toddler, I highly recommend this toddler sling.

Cost of Living & Rentals:

• Average 2-Bedroom Rental: A 2-bedroom in a family-friendly area like Estoril or Príncipe Real ranges from $3,500–$6,000/month in July.

• Stocking Up: For a massive initial stock-up, grab a ride-share to an Auchen, a massive Walmart-like supermarket.

The “American Reality” Check:

• Air Conditioning: More common in modern Lisbon apartments, but still rare in older buildings. Check for “Ar Condicionado.”

• Laundry: A very standard European setup: washer in the kitchen, no dryer. Buy a drying rack and let the Atlantic sun do the work.

The Weather: What to Expect in July

• The Temperature: It ranges from 75°F–85°F. It’s rarely “stifling” because of the proximity to the ocean. However, it can definitely get into the mid 90°Fs in July, and Douro Valley can easily be in the 100°Fs

• Evening Vibe: You’ll definitely want a light jacket at night as it can get chilly in the breeze.

The Portugal Food Scene & Typical Schedule

What to Eat:

• Summer Produce: July is the season of figs and stone fruits. Look for the giant, sweet Alentejo Melons and watermelons sold at markets.

• Market Staples: Keep an eye out for Costoluto-style tomatoes and the uniquely sweet zucchine at local mercados.

• Pastel de Nata: You can’t live in Portugal for a summer without a Pastel de Nata ritual. They are the perfect morning snack (lanche da manhã) or 4:00 p.m. bribe for the kids. My son still talks about them!

• Seafood: So much seafood! Order it all!

• The Wine Scene: Everyone knows Port, but for hot summer afternoons, you want Vinho Verde. It’s a “green” (young) wine from the north. It’s crisp, slightly effervescent, and low in alcohol, making it the perfect day-drinking choice.

Typical Eating Schedule:

• Lunch: 12:30 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. Many restaurants offer a Prato do Dia (dish of the day) that includes soup, a main, and coffee for a steal.

• Dinner: 8:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. While some spots open at 7:00 p.m., they will be empty. Locals don’t start showing up until at least 8:00 p.m.. If you have younger kids, look for “Tascas” (casual taverns) where the vibe is loud and nobody cares if your toddler is under the table.

Things to Do With Kids

I cannot stress just how many indoor and outdoor activities there are to do with kids in and around Lisbon, not to mention the many beaches to explore. This is a fraction of my extensive list. Plus Porto and the Algarve have an entire list of things as well. TLDR, this is a sample with Lisbon as your home base, not my full Portugal menu.

• Skip the Tram and do a Tuk Tuk Lisboa tour instead: Seriously, avoid the insane crowds and lines, the tram won’t be enjoyable with kids. Instead opt for a private Tuk Tuk tour instead to see all of Lisbon without little legs getting tired.

• Oceanário de Lisboa: A great urban aquarium to visit in the morning. Walk over to Honest Greens after for a yummy late lunch.

• Cascais Beaches: Take the train from Lisbon to Cascais and spend the day at the beautiful beaches. For older kids there is an inflatable obstacle course in the water to enjoy.

• Pavilhão do Conhecimento: An interactive science museum in Parque das Nações that kids actually want to stay in all day.

• Picnic at Jardim da Estrela: A beautiful park with a great playground and a kiosk cafe for parents to grab a coffee or set up a nice picnic.

• LX Factory: An industrial-chic complex with great shops, art, and rooftop bars. Perfect for a kid-free afternoon.

• Quinta da Regaleira: Travel to fairytale Sintra on the train from Lisbon for a day of exploring. Skip Pena Palace if its not sunny out or (its quite miserable), but definitely visit the spiral staircase regardless of the weather.

Things to Do Without Kids

Same story as above, there are SO MANY things to do and restaurants to try sans kids. This is a small snippet of my favorites.

• Sunset at a “Miradouro”: Head to Miradouro da Graça for a glass of wine and the best sunset view over the red roofs of Lisbon.

• Boat Tour: My favorite way to see the city, enjoy a full morning or afternoon sipping Vino Verde from a boat along the water.

• Sintra Hike: Do the steep hike up to the Castelo dos Mouros without having to carry a toddler. The views are incredible.

• Eat at 2 Michelin Star Alma: For a real, memorable treat, try Alma for new-age Portuguese dishes, or try one of the 38+ one Michelin star dining experiences in Lisbon’s dense concentration of fine dining.

• Wine Tasting in Chiado: Visit a local wine bar to sample Vinho Verde (perfect for summer) or a deep Douro red.

When Willow was 8 weeks old and Caden was 2, we took a family trip (with our au pair) to Tuscany for 3.5 weeks and it changed our entire outlook on travel… and honestly our relationship with work.

Caden was a COVID baby (born in May 2020) and although travel was such a big part of our lives pre-kids, we really never got the chance to experience it post-kids until this moment. I thought, as many do, that traveling with kids just wasn’t an option. Caden didn’t go on his first flight until he was 13 months old. The height of COVID had a lot to do with it, but it also really intimidated us. AFTER we spent this transformative time in Tuscany, we proceeded to travel nonstop. Willow clocked in her 26th flight on her first birthday.

Aside from realizing travel with kids IS possible, the biggest revelation we had is that we, as Americans, do not take enough real time off. Prior to this trip, my biggest request was 2 weeks for my honeymoon. But in Tuscany, in the middle of August, we were surrounded by Europeans taking the entire month off. Their attitude was refreshing: Work will be there when we return.

It made us think… why are we waiting for retirement to live these nourishing experiences? I have deep nostalgia for Tuscany. It truly is the quintessential family summer.

One note: Tuscany is MASSIVE. It’s a huge stretch of central Italy. You can have completely different experiences depending on the sub-region. There is beach, countryside, small villages, large villages like Montepulciano and cities like Florence and Siena.

Logistics: Getting There & Staying There

• Major Airports: Land at Florence (FLR) or Pisa (PSA).

• Flights: Direct flights from U.S. hubs like NYC or Boston often land in Rome (FCO) or Milan (MXP) or from Central and West Coast you likely will have a connection from a larger hub like Frankfurt. From Rome or Milan, it’s a quick 1.5-hour high-speed train or short connection. From other airport hubs you’ll have a 1+ hour connection. Be warned smaller Italian based airlines often service Florence and are renowned for delays, cancellations, and lost baggage (our stroller got lost for 1.5 weeks). Total travel time is usually 9–12 hours.

• The Commute to Florence: From Florence airport to the city center is 20 minutes. To reach the countryside, expect a 45–120 minute drive.

Getting Around: Stroller vs. Scooter Realism

• If staying outside of Florence…rent the car: You cannot do the Tuscany countryside without a car. For a family of 4, opt for a small SUV; some village roads are incredibly narrow.

• The Stroller Strategy: Leave the flimsy “city” stroller at home. You need a stroller with sturdy, all-terrain wheels for the uneven cobblestones. Highly recommend the Uppababy Minu V3 which fits in the overhead bin, but I’ve personally tested over and over again on cobblestone and it passes every time.

• Skip the Scooters: Between the hills and the stones, scooters will just end up being something you have to carry.

Cost of Living & Rentals:

• Average 2-Bedroom Rental: For a family-friendly villa or agriturismo, expect to spend between $3,500–$6,500/month in July.

• Outsource the Stocking: TBH this region isn’t one of much “convenience” like we are used to in the states. You’ll need to plan to do your own shopping. Look for supermarkets like Coop or Carrefour which often have small formats in towns and larger in cities.

The “American Reality” Check:

• Air Conditioning: It is rare in the countryside. Thick stone walls keep things cooler, but always check for “A/C” or “Climatizzazione” if you can’t sleep in the heat. More likely though, you should be checking for fans, and asking about the quantity to make sure there is at least one per room.

• Laundry Habits: Standalone dryers are nearly non-existent. Embrace the Italian way: hanging clothes on a rack in the Tuscan sun. They dry in minutes!

• The “Slow” Pace of Life: Service in Italy isn’t “bad,” it’s just intentional. Don’t expect the check to come the second you finish your meal. You have to ask for it (Il conto, per favore). A “quick” lunch can easily take two hours, so order that extra aperol spritz and just lean into it.

The Weather: What to Expect in July

Tuscan summers are sun-drenched but increasingly prone to heatwaves.

• The Temperature: Daily highs average around 85°F–90°F, but can spike into the 100s during heatwaves.

• Evening Vibe: The air cools down significantly in the countryside. Evenings are balmy and perfect for al fresco dining.

The Tuscany Food Scene & Typical Schedule

What to Eat:

• Heirloom Produce: July is peak season for Costoluto Fiorentino tomatoes (the heavily ribbed ones that are actually sweet) and Zucchine Fiorentine. Look for Fiori di Zucca (zucchini flowers) they are everywhere and usually stuffed with ricotta and fried.

• Stone Fruits: The fruit stalls are overflowing with white saucer peaches (pesche tabacchiere), apricots, and plums… and look for the trees to pick fresh in the countryside.

• Pasta: Pici is the local hand-rolled pasta of the region and is a hit with kids. Pappardelle is also super common.

• Pizza: Expect rustic, thin, and crispy olive oil-heavy flatbread.

• Cheese: Pecorino Toscano is king here. In July, Italians love serving fresh fava beans with thin slices of young Pecorino.

• The Wine Scene: While Tuscany is famous for big reds like Chianti Classico and Brunello di Montalcino, they can feel heavy in the 90-degree heat. For your villa afternoons, look for Vernaccia di San Gimignano (the region’s iconic white) or a chilled Vermentino from the coast. TBH we realized on our trip we don’t love the majority of Tuscan reds… we are self-proclaimed wine snobs and much prefer the oaky, fruit-forward reds of Napa. That said, my husband who has the title of our family’s sommelier, wrote an entire article about Tuscan red wines that is a must-read ahead of your trip.

Typical Eating Schedule:

• Lunch: 1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. This is often the main meal of the day.

• Dinner: Locals don’t eat before 8:30 p.m. Most restaurants don’t even open their doors until 7:30 p.m.

Things to Do With Kids

• Castiglione della Pescaia: Head to the Maremma coast for shallow, sandy beaches and calm water. Perfect for a day at a “Bagno” (beach club).

• Agriturismo Farm Days: Visit a sheep farm like Pieve a Salti for cheese tasting while the kids pet the animals.

• Pinocchio Park in Collodi: A nostalgic, whimsical park with puppet shows and vintage rides that feels like stepping back in time.

• Pasta Making Class: Many villas can arrange a local nonna to come to you. It’s the best 2-hour “activity” that also covers dinner.

• The “Piazza Run”: Every evening at 6 p.m., head to the local town square. The kids run free while you have an Aperol Spritz.

• Hot Springs Club: Visit Rapolano Terme for an afternoon of hot springs swimming in a more organized environment rather than a countryside “natural” pool.

Things to Do Without Kids

• Sunset at Piazzale Michelangelo: If you’re in Florence, this is the spot for the best view of the city with a bottle of wine.

• Spa Day at Terme di Saturnia or La Posta Hotel: Visit the natural thermal hot springs or the luxury resort spa for a “water reset.”

• Antinori nel Chianti Classico: Visit this architectural masterpiece of a winery for a high-end tasting and lunch. Pro tip: book lunch there so you can enjoy a meal in a stunning setting and still get to taste the wines.

• Boutique Shopping in Lucca: Walk the top of the ancient city walls, then head inside for high-end Italian linens and leather.

• Private Boat to Elba: Rent a boat for the day to explore the crystal clear coves of the Tuscan archipelago.

Local Support

In the countryside, finding a sitter requires a bit more lead time than in the city, and your best bet may be asking a trusted local source like a local.

• MissBabysitter: A reliable agency covering the Tuscany region with vetted, multilingual sitters. Average Rates: €15–€25/hour.

• International Babysitters: Highly recommended for English-speaking families. They specialize in holiday childcare for travelers. Average Rates: €20–€30/hour.

• Villa Staff: Many agriturismos have local staff who will babysit if you ask in advance.

I saw one woman had a photo of Spain, and when I asked how she was making it happen, she told me she’s joining Roam Collective in August. (If you are new here, I co-created Roam Collective this past Fall as a family summer abroad program in San Sebastian).

Talk about a surreal, full-circle moment of my worlds colliding. Another woman had a sparkling image of the Mediterranean Sea. She mentioned that since having kids, they’ve done plenty of road trips, but haven’t braved international travel yet. As I was giving her some encouragement, she subtly mentioned getting a newsletter all about summer camps in Barcelona and thought it might be the perfect solution to finally get her kids abroad.

I had to laugh as I realized… “Wait, I think that was my newsletter!” She had no idea I was the one who sent it. HA!

But that conversation clicked something into place for me. While my intention for this series is to encourage you to spend your entire summer differently, I’m realizing there is a massive use case for a shorter stint, even just one or two weeks. It’s the ultimate hack: the kids get a curated experience, and we as parents get to explore a bucket-list destination exactly the way we want, while still creating those core family memories.

Which brings us to edition number two: Paris, France.

Personally, Paris is a bit larger of a city than I tend to gravitate to for a long-term stay, but it’s worth mentioning because it has so much to offer for families. If you live in a smaller town or suburb, you might be craving this type of high-energy pace! Jason and I traveled to Paris pre-kids, and I dream of returning with my little ones having massive picnics in front of the Eiffel Tower, eating Steak Frites (my kids LOVE steak and fries), and scootering along the Seine.

• Jardin d’Acclimatation: A historic amusement park in the Bois de Boulogne with rides specifically for younger kids, pony rides, and a massive paddling pool with water jets and giant slides.

• Interactive Science Museums: Cité des Enfants (within Parc de la Villette) offers hands-on exhibits for school-age kids, or try the quirky Musée de la Chasse et de la Nature for nature-obsessed older children.

• Seine River Cruise: Opt for the Batobus, it’s a hop-on-hop-off water taxi with 9 stops at major sites like the Eiffel Tower and Louvre. It’s a low-key way to see the city without tired legs.

• Eiffel Tower Picnic: Grab a still-warm baguette from Les Saveurs Cler and curated local cheeses from Marie-Anne Cantin or Laurent Dubois on the nearby pedestrian street of Rue Cler for an iconic spread at the foot of the Eiffel Tower. If it’s a Wednesday or Sunday, hit the Marché Grenelle for a whole roasted chicken and potatoes to bridge the gap between camp pickup and the tower’s hourly evening sparkle.

Things to Do Without Kids

• A “Flâneur” Afternoon in Le Marais: This neighborhood is a masterclass in architecture and niche shopping. Wander through the historic Place des Vosges, the oldest planned square in Paris, to explore hidden art galleries and high-end boutiques tucked under vaulted stone arcades.

• The Ultimate Adult Lunch: Skip the kid-friendly crêperies and snag a midday table at an iconic spot like a terrace table at Loulou by the Louvre gardens.

• Perfume & Scent Workshops: Lean into your creative side with an adult-only workshop. Fragonard offers hands-on perfume-making classes in the 9th arrondissement where you can design your own signature summer scent.

• Canal Saint-Martin Picnic: Grab a bottle of wine and a picnic from a local market and sit along the canal banks like a true local.

• Rooftop Cocktails: For the best golden hour views, head to Terrass in Montmartre or Girafe near Trocadéro. Arrive before sunset to snag a spot overlooking the Parisian rooftops as the lights begin to flicker on.

• Underground Wine Tastings: Step into the 18th-century royal wine cellars of King Louis XV at Les Caves du Louvre for a guided nighttime tasting in atmospheric underground tunnels.

• Speakeasy Hopping in the Marais: The neighborhood is full of hidden doors and world-class cocktails. Explore the narrow, cobbled lanes after 10 p.m. to discover candlelit wine bars that only truly come alive once the sun goes down.

• Crazy Horse Paris: For a quintessential Parisian night out, book a show at this iconic burlesque. It’s sophisticated, artistic, and the perfect “adults-only” sharp contrast to your day at the playground.

Local Support

Camps end at 4:00 or 5:00 p.m. You need a system for that bridge. For late-night U.S. Zoom calls or kid-free bistro nights, I recommend booking background-checked care through these platforms:

• Babysits: A huge network of local sitters. It’s more of a platform where you can filter by language and experience. Average Rates: €12–€15/hour.

• Nanny Please / Baby Prestige: These are higher-end, fully vetted agencies that specialize in hotel and holiday care. Expect professional, often bilingual caregivers. Average Rates: €25–€45/hour (sometimes higher on weekends or late nights).

Over the last few years, I’ve met over 60 families who do this every summer, and we’re constantly dropping tips in our private WhatsApp groups about everything from vetting international schools to the most family-friendly islands in Greece.

I’m kicking things off with a city that has my heart: Barcelona, Spain. I’ve gathered 8 vetted summer camps for you to explore.

Logistics: Getting There & Staying There

Ease of Getting There:

• Major Airport: You’ll land at Barcelona-El Prat (BCN).

• Flights: Direct flights are common from major U.S. hubs like New York (JFK/EWR), Boston (BOS), and San Francisco (SFO).

• The Commute: The airport is very close to the city center. A rideshare/taxi takes about 20–25 minutes (€30–€35) - do this with your fam since the Aerobus or train takes roughly 30–35 minutes and is €5–€10/per person.

Getting Around

• Stroller/Scooter friendliness: Most neighborhoods are very stroller friendly, but scooters are dependent on neighborhood. The Eixample and Barceloneta have big wide sidewalks for scooters, but historic areas have cobblestone and/or narrow streets.

• The Metro: While Barcelona is highly walkable and stroller-friendly, several main subway stations lack elevators so be prepared to fold up your stroller/carry your little one frequently.

Cost of Living for the Month:

• Average 2-Bedroom Rental: Expect to spend between $3,500 and $6,500 per month for a 2-bedroom family-friendly Airbnb in central neighborhoods during July.

• Outsource the Stocking: Don’t waste your first 48 hours in a supermarket. Use Glovo for express grocery delivery. They deliver everything from diapers to local market items quickly.

The “American Reality” Check:

• Air Conditioning: Central AC is rare. Look for “Climatización” in your listing.

• The “Siesta” & Sunday Routine: Many local shops close between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. and all day Sunday which can be quite annoying, though major markets and public parks like Parc de la Ciutadella stay open.

The Weather in July

Barcelona in July is predictably sunny and warm, but the Mediterranean humidity is the real factor to plan for.

• The Temperature: Daily highs average around 83°F to 84°F, while evenings stay mild at 70°F to 73°F. *Note: this is what the internet says, but I’d expect temps to be in the 90s in July.

• The Humidity: July is moderately humid (averaging 67%), which can make midday feel a bit heavier.

• The “Beach/Pool Score”: Cloud cover is at its lowest of the year (only 16%), making it prime time for water activities.

The Barcelona Food Scene

What to Eat:

• Casual Tapas: Perfect for kids who like to “sample.” Don’t miss Patatas Bravas, Pan con Tomate, and Croquetas.

• Mid-Day “Menu del Día”: A 3-course fixed-price lunch (€12–€18) is the best value in the city.

• Bocadillos: You can find a variety of sandwiches at many cafes for a quick lunch. Be sure to go to Bo de B for the best sandwich of your life then eat it on the beach (arrive early and with cash, there will be a line).

• Paella: Meat, seafood, or veggie, stroll up to one of dozens of restaurants in Barceloneta for this authentic experience.

Typical Eating Schedule:

• Lunch: 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

• The “Merienda”: This 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. snack is non-negotiable for kids—think chocolate and churros or a small bocadillo to tide them over until late dinner.

• Dinner: Locals don’t sit down until 9:00 p.m. or later. For an “early” dinner with kids, look for tapas bars that open around 7:30 p.m.

Things to Do With Kids

• Tibidabo Amusement Park: A retro, mountaintop park with some of the best views of the city.

• CosmoCaixa (Science Museum): An interactive museum with a “Flooded Forest” that kids absolutely love.

• Park Güell: Gaudí’s colorful mosaics are a hit with children; go early to beat the crowds and heat. *Be prepared for crowds

• Gothic Quarter Walking Tour: Look for tours designed for families that include stops at candy shops and giant-statue museums.

• Nova Icària: This beach features calm waters, soft sand, and is significantly quieter than the bustling Barceloneta. There is a great playground right on the sand, and it’s steps away from the Port Olímpic entertainment area.

• Castelldefels: A 15-minute train ride south, this 5km stretch of golden sand is a local favorite for its shallow waters and excellent beach clubs.

Some notes about Barcelona beaches:

• Every major beach is equipped with lifeguards, accessible ramps for strollers, showers, and clean restrooms.

• A wide, paved walkway stretches from Barceloneta all the way to Nova Icària, making it perfect for a morning scooter session before camp drop-off.

• At the Centre de la Platja (near Hospital del Mar), you can find a beach lending service that provides toys and equipment for kids.

Things to Do Without Kids

• Sunset at Bunkers del Carmel: Pack a bottle of Spanish Cava and head here for a 360-degree sunset view of the city.

• Private Penedès Wine Tour: Take a short train ride out to the vineyards for cava tastings.

• Rooftop Concerts at Casa Batlló: Experience Gaudí’s architecture at night with live music and cocktails.

• Gothic Quarter After Dark: Wander the narrow streets for hidden candlelit wine bars that only truly come alive after 10 p.m.

• La Xampanyeria: A very lively, standing-room only bar serving up cheap (but tasty) cava and bites.

Bridging the Evening Gap

If you are working U.S. hours, the biggest hurdle you’ll face in Spain isn’t the language, it’s the late-night dining and childcare gap. While local camps typically end between 4:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m., the city doesn’t truly sit down for dinner until 9:00 p.m. If you plan to eat out many evenings as a family, you’ll need a system to bridge the gap.

Vetted Local Support

Don’t rely on finding a sitter once you land. I recommend booking through a reputable agency before you leave to ensure you have multilingual, background-checked care ready for your late-night Zoom calls or kid-free dinners:

• Peekaboo Barcelona: A favorite for international families. They offer vetted babysitters who can come directly to your Airbnb. They also have an afternoon Ludoteca (play center) if you just need a few hours of work time.

• Tiny Heroes: They specialize in short-term holiday assistance, are multilingual, and are a great option if your child has unique care requirements.

• MissBabysitter: A reliable agency that provides legally contracted sitters across Spain, perfect for one-off evenings or continued support throughout your stay.

Operationalizing the Evening Routine

• In Spain, kids have a ritual snack (merienda) around 5:00 p.m. Use this time to hit the shaded playgrounds in neighborhoods like Poblenou or Gràcia, which stay active while smaller shops close for siesta.

• When researching camps, always check for extended care options. Many offer “After School Clubs” or late-stay programs that can extend your work block until 5:30 p.m. or 6:00 p.m.
