I like to say I was meant to be a blonde and the universe just made a mistake, which is why it somehow looks extremely natural. Between a very good hairstylist and the fact that my son is very blonde, it’s no wonder this fun fact catches people off guard.

My blonde journey started at 17 with Sun In “highlights” (IYKYK). From there, college and my early twenties were a rotation of not-great dye jobs and questionable highlights. The color wasn’t always good… but through all of it, I somehow managed to keep my hair really strong and healthy.

I’ve tested a lot over the years. Every buzzy product, every “game-changing” tool. And while I still love trying new things, here’s the truth:

You can base yourself in Marseille for a high-energy, urban Mediterranean experience with incredible food and artsy vibes, or you can retreat to the hills near Aix-en-Provence for that quintessential, slow-paced Provencal life.

We spent a long weekend in Aix this past summer, and TBH I loved it more than Nice! It’s culturally-rich, lively, and has everything you need to live a vibrant summer abroad. It’s also just 45 minutes away from Cassis, which is one of the most stunning seaside towns I’ve ever been to.

Logistics: Getting There & Staying There

Ease of Getting There:

• Major Airport: Land at Marseille Provence Airport (MRS).

• Flights: There are seasonal direct flights from the East Coast, but most travelers connect through Paris (CDG) or London. Expect 1–2 stops from the West Coast.

• The Commute: The airport is about 25 minutes from Marseille and 30 minutes from Aix-en-Provence.

Getting Around: Stroller vs. Scooter Realism

• The Stroller: In Aix, the cobblestones are relatively smooth, but in Marseille’s older districts like Le Panier, there are constant stairs.

• Kid Scooters: Marseille’s Vieux Port (Old Port) and the Corniche are flat, paved, and perfect for scooters.

• The Car: Essential for Provence. Be prepared for very tight parking in city centers, look for “Parking Public” and be ready to pay for the convenience.

Housing:

• Marseille Housing: A 2-bedroom apartment in a family-friendly area like the 7th Arrondissement ranges from $3,000–$5,500/month in July.

• Aix-en-Provence Housing: For a more polished, walkable experience, focus on the streets surrounding Cours Mirabeau or the quieter Mazarin district. With a car, you can also explore the more rural houses for more space. Expect to pay between $3,500–$5,500/month in July.

• Pro tip: I highly recommend prioritizing a rental with a pool. The heat in July is intense, and having an immediate way for the kids to cool off in the afternoons will keep everyone happy.

The “American Reality” Check:

• Air Conditioning: Provence gets hot. You must verify that your rental has A/C, especially in Marseille where the stone buildings trap the heat.

• Sunday Closures: Except for a few tourist-heavy spots, Sunday is a ghost town for retail. Stock up on Saturday, or join the locals at the Sunday morning flower and food markets.

• Laundry: Standard European setup of a washer in the kitchen, but no dryer.

The Weather: What to Expect in July

• The Temperature: Dry and hot. Expect highs between 85°F and 92°F.

• The Evening Vibe: Perfection. The temperature drops just enough to be comfortable, and the “golden hour” in Provence lasts forever.

The Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur Food Scene & Typical Schedule

What to Eat:

• Navettes: Orange blossom-scented biscuits from Marseille. They are hard and boat-shaped; kids love dipping them in milk.

• Panisse: Chickpea flour fries. They are a Marseille staple and the ultimate kid-approved savory snack.

• Ratatouille: The classic summer stew. It’s the best way to get kids to eat Mediterranean produce.

• Rosé & Pastis: For the parents, a chilled glass of Provence Rosé or a cloud of water-diluted Pastis at 6:00 p.m. is the local law.

Typical Eating Schedule:

• Lunch: 12:30 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. Many restaurants stop serving at 2:00 sharp.

• The “Goûter”: 4:30 p.m. The mandatory afternoon snack (usually a pain au chocolat or fruit).

• Dinner: 8:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. It’s a bit earlier than some other European countries but still a late affair compared to the U.S.

Things to Do With Kids

• The Calanques by Boat: Rent a private boat from the Vieux Port in Marseille to swim in the hidden turquoise coves of Sormiou or Morgiou.

• Le Petit Train: Every French city has one, but the Marseille version that climbs up to Notre-Dame de la Garde is actually a thrill with great views.

• Château d’If: Take the ferry to see the island fortress where the Count of Monte Cristo was “imprisoned.”

• The Haribo Museum: Located in Uzès (about an hour away), it’s a sugar-coated rite of passage for every kid in the region.

• The Luberon Villages: Spend a day hopping between Gordes and Roussillon. Roussillon has the “Ochre Trail,” which is basically a giant orange sand-box for kids to hike through.

• Aqualand St Cyr Sur Mer: A classic, massive water park about 30 minutes from Marseille for when the kids need a “non-culture” day.

• Day Trip to Cassis: This is one of the most stunning Mediterranean towns I’ve ever been to. Book a boat tour from the harbor to see the turquoise inlets, or if you have older kids, take the hike to a secluded beach in the Calanques for a truly world-class experience.

Things to Do Without Kids

• Rosé Tasting in Cassis: The white and rosé wines here are elite. Visit Clos Sainte Magdeleine for a tasting right on the edge of the sea.

• Shopping in Aix: The boutiques in the old town are incredible.

• Dinner at Le Vallon des Auffes: A tiny, hidden fishing port in Marseille with world-class seafood and a very romantic vibe.

• The Carrières des Lumières: An immersive art show projected onto the walls of a giant limestone quarry in Les Baux-de-Provence.

• Evening at a Rooftop Bar: Head to Les Réformés or La Caravelle in Marseille for cocktails overlooking the city.

Local Support

If you’ve been looking for a destination that feels safe, soulful, and just the right amount of adventurous, Croatia is calling.

Logistics: Getting There & Staying There

Ease of Getting There:

• Major Airports: Land in Zagreb (ZAG) for the city/STEM camps, Split (SPU) for the islands/Makarska, or Pula (PUY) for Istria.

• Flights: There are seasonal direct flights from the U.S. (mostly NYC to Dubrovnik), but most travelers connect through London, Frankfurt, or Munich. Expect 1–2 stops from the West Coast.

• The Commute: Zagreb’s airport is 25 minutes from the center. Split’s airport is about 40 minutes from the ferry port.

Getting Around: Stroller vs. Scooter Realism

• The Stroller: In the old stone towns (Split/Hvar), strollers are tough.

• Kid Scooters: Great for the flat waterfront rivas in Porec or Rabac, but keep them away from the steep, stepped alleys of the old towns.

• The Ferry: Ferries are the “buses” of the coast. Fast catamarans are great for day trips.

Housing:

• A 2-bedroom apartment in a family-friendly area like Zagreb’s Lower Town or the residential parts of Pula ranges from $2,500–$4,500/month in July.

• Island rentals in Hvar or Brač can spike higher.

The “American Reality” Check:

• Air Conditioning: Essential in July. Temperatures hit the 90s regularly. Always verify your rental has “Klima” (A/C) in the bedrooms, not just the main room.

• The “Fijaka”: This is the Dalmatian state of mind, a “sweetness of doing nothing.” Service might be slow, and shops might close mid-day. Don’t fight it; join it.

• Laundry: Dryers are rare. Clothes are dried on lines outside. With the salt air and sun, your swimsuits will be dry in 20 minutes.

The Weather: What to Expect in July

• The Temperature: Hot and sunny. Expect daytime highs of 88°F–95°F. The Adriatic Sea is the perfect 75°F–78°F refreshing but easy to stay in for hours.

• The Evening Vibe: Balmy and social. The humidity is lower than in the U.S. East Coast, so as soon as the sun drops, the air feels incredible.

The Croatia Food Scene & Typical Schedule

What to Eat:

• Peka: Meat or octopus slow-cooked under a bell-shaped lid. It’s the ultimate “welcome to Croatia” meal.

• Ćevapi: Small grilled meat sausages in flatbread. It’s the universal kid-favorite “fast food” that is actually high quality.

• Black Risotto (Crni Rižot): Made with cuttlefish ink. It turns everyone’s teeth black, which kids find hilarious and delicious.

• Wine & Spirits: For parents, try the Pošip (crisp white) or Plavac Mali (bold red). If you’re brave, a morning Rakija with a local is a rite of passage

• Lunch: 1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. Usually the biggest meal.

Because in a funny way this series ended up reinforcing so many of the beliefs I talk about all the time: take action before you feel fully ready, stop waiting to see the whole staircase before taking the next step, and please, I mean please, let go of perfection. Especially the arbitrary deadlines you create, assign deep meaning to, and then use to pressure yourself unnecessarily.

It also reminded me how much I’ve actually learned over 36 years. Some lessons came from major life seasons that changed me deeply. Others came from the smaller shifts, habits, and perspective changes that have helped me live a better, fuller life.

Also, creating and editing reels 36 days in a row? Humbling… even with the support of my social media manager who is an editor extraordinaire. So no, I did not finish all 36 by today, my actual birthday. But I’m weirdly not mad about it. It feels like part of the lesson too.

1. Build leverage, not loyalty.

2. Time is your most valuable resource. Start treating it like the asset it is.

3. If you want to be in the room, pull up your own chair.

4. Not doing it all is the badge of honor to strive for.

5. Freedom isn’t given. It’s engineered.

6. You don’t have to wait for your body to force the boundary. You can start it now.

7. Prioritize your whole self, not just your job.

8. Speed is a strategy. Trust is a process. … and omg I just realized I never pressed publish on this one!! Will be circling back.

9. If you are building something intentional, you should not be for everyone. And you cannot take it personally when you’re not.

10. Lean into the discomfort. Growth rarely feels comfortable…until it does.

11. Manifestation is confidence said out loud.

12. Stop. Breathe. Be.

13. Stop playing it safe.

14. Don’t do it perfectly, do it consistently.

15. Crawl. Walk. Run. Build the minimum viable version and start.

16. Curiosity will take you further than credentials ever will.

17. Action creates clarity.

18. Fake it till you make it.

19. If it matters, put it on your calendar.

20. Mornings set the tone.

21. Slowing down is strategic.

22. Big things are built in seasons. Honor the one you’re in.

23. Leverage your strengths daily.

24. Delegate or drown.

25. “Mom” is part of you, not all of you.

26. Quality will always matter more than quantity in friendships.

27. Marriage is a team sport.

28. Comparison keeps you consuming when you should be creating.

29. Joy must be protected, not postponed.

30. Master the reframe.

31. You are allowed to redefine success.

32. Closing the door that no longer serves you reveals doors you couldn’t see before.

That is what makes Northern Italy feel so special. From the Dolomites to Lake Como to Milan, it offers a more livable summer with cooler temperatures and just as much charm.

Ease of Getting There:

• Major Airports: Land in Milan Malpensa (MXP) for the lakes/Dolomites, or Venice Marco Polo (VCE) for the eastern region.

• Flights: Several major U.S. cities offer seasonal non-stop flights to Milan and Venice, mostly from the East Coast. If you’re flying from the West Coast (Los Angeles, San Francisco, etc.), expect 1-2 stops.

• The Commute: Reaching the camp hubs varies. Milan is a 50-minute train from Malpensa. Padua and Venice camps are within 30-45 minutes of the VCE airport. For the Dolomites, expect a 2.5-hour drive from Venice or Milan.

Getting Around: Stroller vs. Scooter Realism

• The Stroller: In cities like Milan or Padua, a standard stroller is fine. In Venice, strollers are a nightmare due to the endless bridges; baby-wearing is your only sane option.

• Kid Scooters: Great for the flat parks of Milan or the lakeside promenades of Garda. Not recommended for the steep mountain villages of the Dolomites.

• The Train: Italy’s Frecciarossa (high-speed train) is the best way to move between Milan, Bologna, and Venice. It’s clean, fast, and very family-friendly.

Cost of Living & Rentals:

• Housing: A 2-bedroom apartment in a family-friendly area like Brera in Milan or near the parks in Padua ranges from $3,200–$5,500/month in July. Lakeside villas and Dolomite chalets can skew much, much higher.

• A Note on Venice Housing: Finding long-term stays on the island is a unique challenge; expect to pay a premium ($4,500–$7,000+) for a 2-bedroom. For better value and easier logistics, many families look at Giudecca (quieter/local) or Lido (beach access and actual space for kids to run).

The “American Reality” Check:

• Air Conditioning: More common in Milan and Genoa, but often non-existent in mountain chalets. Usually, the mountain air is enough, but always verify “Aria Condizionata” if you’re heat-sensitive.

• The Riposo: Shops and many restaurants close between 12:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. It is the mandatory Italian nap time.

• Laundry: Standalone dryers are very rare. You’ll be using the “stendino” (drying rack). In the dry mountain air, things dry fast!

The Weather: What to Expect in July

• The Temperature: In the cities and plains (Milan, Padua, Bologna), expect highs between 85°F and 90°F with higher humidity than the coast. In the Dolomites and Lake regions, the daytime is a perfect 75°F–80°F, though the mountain sun is incredibly intense.

• The Evening Vibe: City nights stay warm. In the mountains, the temperature drops quickly after sunset to the 50s or 60s.

The Northern Italy Food Scene & Typical Schedule

What to Eat:

• Risotto & Polenta: Northern Italy swaps heavy tomato sauces for creamy rice and cornmeal. Kids love the “simple” butter and parmesan versions, while parents can dive into the rich saffron-infused Risotto alla Milanese or mountain Polenta topped with melted fontina cheese.

• Cotoletta alla Milanese: The ultimate kid-friendly staple. It’s a thin, breaded, and pan-fried veal or chicken cutlet, essentially the world’s most elevated chicken finger.

• Pesto Genovese & Fresh Pasta: In the Northwest (Liguria), the pesto is bright, fresh, and hand-crushed. Pair it with trofie or trenette pasta; it’s a vibrant, healthy, and high-energy meal that kids actually get excited to eat.

• Speck & Mountain Cheeses: From the Dolomites down to the lakes, the charcuterie boards feature smoky Speck (cured ham) and mild Asiago or Taleggio cheeses. These are perfect for a “grazing” lunch during a hike or a day on the boat.

Typical Eating Schedule:

• Lunch: 12:30 p.m. – 2:00 p.m.

• Aperitivo: 6:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. (The ultimate Northern Italian ritual; many bars offer a buffet of snacks with your drink).

• Dinner: 8:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. Northern Italians tend to dine slightly earlier than the south, but 8:30 p.m. is the “sweet spot” for a lively atmosphere.

Things to Do With Kids

• Dolomites: Take the cable car up to Alpe di Siusi. It’s the highest alpine meadow in Europe and basically a giant, safe playground with cows and easy hiking trails.

• Lake Garda: Visit Gardaland. It’s Italy’s version of Disneyland and located right on the lake.

• Milan: The MUBA (Children’s Museum) in the Rotonda della Besana is an incredible, interactive space for younger kids.

• Genoa: The Aquarium of Genoa is the largest in Europe and located in the historic old port.

• Lake Garda Ferries: Skip the car for a day and hop on the public ferries; kids love the boat ride between Sirmione and Riva del Garda.

• The Children’s Museum of Verona: A high-tech, sensory-driven space that is perfect for a rainy day.

• Dolomite “Fun Bobs”: Summer toboggan runs (like the one in San Candido) that let you slide down the mountain on a rail (perfect for older kids)

• Venice Glass Blowing: Take a private boat to Murano for a kid-friendly demonstration of glass sculpting.

Things to Do Without Kids

• Wine Tours: Head to the Valpolicella region near Verona for Amarone tastings or the Franciacorta region for Italy’s answer to Champagne.

• Bologna Food Tour: Take a deep dive into the “Fat City” to see where Parmigiano Reggiano and traditional Balsamic Vinegar are produced.

• QC Terme San Pellegrino: A stunning, high-end thermal spa in the mountains for a complete parent reset.

A multivitamin? Sure. But a whole countertop of powders, capsules, tinctures, the whole thing? I did not get it.

And now here I am, with a morning, midday, and evening lineup.

To be fair, I did not get here because I suddenly became a supplement person. It was much more gradual than that. After my autoimmune diagnosis, two pregnancies, and just getting way more in tune with my body, I started noticing when things felt off. My energy, brain fog, bloating, all of it. Then after an annual exam, I noticed some thyroid markers were flagged and did not love how casually that was brushed aside.

For context, I’ve been on thyroid medication since I was 18 and I have Hashimoto’s, so this is not a brand new issue for me. That moment pushed me to look into functional medicine, which I liked because it seemed much more focused on asking why something is happening, not just whether your labs are technically still in range.

It was expensive.

Before I get into what I take, quick disclaimer so nobody gets carried away: I am not a doctor, I am not a medical expert, and I could never be in the medical field because blood terrifies me! This is not medical advice. This is just a peek behind the curtain at what I personally take and why. Everyone’s body is different, and this is the kind of thing that should be tailored to your own labs, symptoms, medications, and health history.

So, here’s what’s currently in my routine. Worth noting too… I hate swallowing pills, so I select liquid and powder forms purposefully.

Morning

1. LMNT Electrolytes
This was one of the fastest wins for me. I get lightheaded really easily when I stand up too fast, and adding electrolytes in the morning made a noticeable difference almost immediately.

2. Perelel Synbiotic Greens Powder
I drink this while I brew my morning coffee, after my electrolytes. It helps me check the hydration box again, which I really do struggle with throughout the day, while also giving me fiber, probiotics, and antioxidants. And maybe most importantly, it actually tastes good, which cannot be said for most greens powders.

3. Perelel Triple-Support Protein
The vanilla flavor can be mixed with straight water on days when I truly have 30 seconds to get myself breakfast while running out the door, and yes, it actually tastes good plain. But it also mixes well into a smoothie, yogurt, or even matcha. The formula itself is obviously packed with protein, but also has fiber and creatine.

Midday

4. Cymbiotika B12+B6
This is one I actually feel. Less brain fog, better energy, more clarity. And this formula, importantly for me, is methylated.

I only went down the methylation rabbit hole because my functional medicine doctor strongly encouraged me to check whether I had the MTHFR gene variant. I do, which is why I started paying much closer attention to the forms of B vitamins I was taking, especially B12, B6, and folate.

Methylation is basically one of the body’s behind-the-scenes processes that helps with things like using folate, supporting DNA production, and regulating all kinds of important chemical reactions. So if your body is not processing certain forms of these vitamins as efficiently, the form you take can matter. What I learned is that a lot of B-complex supplements do not actually contain all three, B12, B6, and folate, in methylated forms, which was something I had never known to look for before.

It was one of those very niche, very “oh wow I did not know that” discoveries that ended up changing what I bought.

5. Cymbiotika Liposomal Glutathione
I learned about glutathione for the first time during our MNT Mill Valley opening, when one of our partners was offering it as an injection. It took me basically every day that week to finally pronounce it correctly, which still makes me laugh. But the quick version is that it is considered a powerful detoxifying antioxidant and is often talked about for immune support, skin brightening, and liver support. Once I learned more about it, it became part of my routine.

6. Thorne Vitamin D + K12
Vitamin D is one of those foundational ones that feels especially important for women in their mid-thirties and beyond, especially when it comes to bone density. It is also a big one if you have autoimmune conditions. From what I’ve learned, having your vitamin D in a really solid range can matter for immune system regulation, fatigue, and overall disease activity, which is why this one stays in my lineup.

Evening

7. Doctor’s Best Zinc-L-Carnosine Complex
I added this to help soothe and repair the GI lining, especially when I was focused on reducing bloating and supporting gut healing. It is also often talked about for easing things like heartburn and symptoms associated with leaky gut.

8. L-Glutamine Free-Form Powder
This is another gut-support one for me. It is often used to help strengthen the intestinal lining, support immune function, and help with blood sugar regulation, which is why it became part of my plan.

9. Calm Natural
Very glamorous description here: this helps keep things regular. Enough said.

10. Perelel Sleep Support
This is how I round things out at night. I take it to promote relaxation, take the edge off anxiety, and support better quality sleep.

That’s the current lineup. Not tiny, I know. And not taken perfectly, but I try.

And to be clear, I am not sharing this because I think everyone needs a 10-step supplement routine. I’m sharing it because functional medicine has been such a hot topic lately, and this is one of those areas where I’ve learned so much simply by getting curious and asking better questions.

We’re currently on our sixth au pair in five years, and yes, I’ll explain why. After living this way for half a decade, I’ve realized this is not just childcare. It’s a partnership that requires real structure, clear expectations, and its own set of operating procedures.

In the beginning, I had to figure it out as I went. I made mistakes in interviewing. I wasn’t clear enough about expectations. And I learned the hard way that “common sense” is not a management strategy.

To clarify, au pairs can stay with your family for up to two years. So why have we had six?

The short answer is a series of unexpected events, followed by urgency to fill childcare gaps, which created a much less linear path than I ever anticipated.

Here’s how it unfolded:

• Fall 2019: We matched with our first au pair from France while I was pregnant with Caden.

• Spring 2020: COVID hit, and Europeans were no longer allowed to travel to the U.S. We pieced together childcare with part-time nannies and family support for about a year.

• Spring 2021: Our French au pair still couldn’t come to the U.S., so in a moment of desperation, we matched with an au pair from Mexico who was already in the Bay Area and in rematch. We loved her, but she had an unexpected reason she needed to return home just a couple of months later. She’s since traveled with us on vacation in Mexico, and even flew back for a month to help with the kids when we were in between au pairs.

• Fall 2021: We urgently rematched with another au pair from Colombia who was already in the U.S. and had six months left in her term. Now she is a nanny for another family locally, and we love running into her at the park and on walks! She still babysits for us.

• Spring 2022: Our original French au pair was finally able to come to the U.S.

• Spring 2023: She decided to return home for school rather than extend for a second year. She now lives in LA and we’ve gotten to see her when we travel there. We then matched with a new au pair from Colombia. Unfortunately, her driving skills had been significantly embellished, and we knew almost immediately she was not the right fit for our family. We moved quickly and found another au pair in rematch, originally from Mexico, who was living in Dallas.

That au pair finished her first year with us and stayed for a full second year. She even traveled with us to Portugal for nine weeks before heading back to Mexico.

We had planned for her to return to our family again in the spring, but a few bumps in the road came up. So once again, at the end of 2024, we found ourselves urgently needing childcare. This time, we matched with an au pair in a local rematch who was originally from Latvia. She was with our family for six months, and we mutually agreed not to extend for her second year.

In August 2025, our current au pair from Mexico joined us, and she has been the perfect fit! We’ve already agreed to extend for a second year.

Through all of that trial and error, I’ve refined the process. I’ve tightened our interview filters, sharpened our House Rules, and built a true manual of operations for our home that allows everyone to thrive.

I’m sharing these resources because I’ve lived them. I’ve also personally coached more than ten other families through the process successfully.

At this point, I know exactly what it takes to find the right person, how to integrate them into the rhythm of family life, and how to build a warm relationship while still maintaining the structure a high-functioning home requires.

This guide is a deep dive into the systems I’ve spent the last five years refining.

The TLDR on Au Pairs

Au pairs are between 18 and 26 years old from another country who lives with your family on a cultural exchange visa. In exchange for a private room, board, and a weekly stipend, they provide up to 45 hours of childcare per week, no more than 10 hours per day.

The “Why” for our family:

• Flexibility: Our au pair works a split shift, early mornings and afternoons, plus some evenings. We can shift hours when needed, extend one night a week for a built-in date night, and have support that can travel with us.

• Connection: Our kids have someone familiar in their home who loves them.

• Language: We care deeply about our kids being bilingual in Spanish. It’s probably the single biggest skill I wish I had developed earlier in life.

• Cost: In a city like San Francisco, the math is hard to ignore. Once you factor in the stipend, food, phone, and agency fees, the total annual cost is around $28,000 depending on bonuses and extras. That’s more than half the cost of a full-time nanny in most cities, and one-third of the cost here in SF, which makes it a much more sustainable long-term solution for ongoing support.

How to find your right match

Finding the right au pair is exactly like hiring a team member at work. You need a process that filters for alignment, defaults to action, and screens for your specific family “vibe.”

1. Choose an agency: You must go through a government-regulated agency. We looked across several when we first started and found Cultural Care had the best pool for us, especially a strong concentration of Latin American and European au pairs. 2. Define your non-negotiables: Do you need a strong driver? Someone who speaks a certain language? Someone with proven toddler experience? Someone who has cared for multiple children? Do you want them to eat dinner with you? Prefer they spend most time out of your house? Need someone who is willing to work weekends consistently?

3. The profile: Don’t just look at the photos. Read the essays for signs of maturity. Look for consistent childcare experience with children the same age as yours. Bonus points if they’ve worked in a daycare, preschool, or elementary school setting, not just “helping at church.” Your instinct may be to choose someone older, but we’ve actually had great experiences with au pairs between 21 and 24.

4. Interview with intention: Don’t just “chat.” Use a multi-interview structure to see how they handle stress and if their values align with yours. My exact interview process is below.

5. Timing matters: Start interviewing about three months before your ideal start date. If you have less than a month, you’ll likely need to focus only on au pairs already in the U.S., either those in rematch or those looking for a second-year extension with a new family.

It was my body.

From the outside, I looked exactly like someone who had it together.

I learned early that looking cool, calm and collected was part of the job. I got good at it. I’d say ‘no worries!’ when I was absolutely worried. I’d say yes to ownership beyond my capacity. I’d take on the emotional highs and lows of my team to keep them happy, motivated and successful.

I had the title, the team, the calendar full of meetings, the reputation for being the one who always delivered.

Inside, I was running on something that felt like adrenaline and pure will. I’d make lists just to feel in control. I’d over-prepare for meetings so no one could question me.

My body was sending subtle signs. I woke up tired even after sleeping (yes my kids definitely contributed). My patience got thinner. I felt like I was always on, always bracing, always one interruption away from snapping. I remember losing it over a box of cereal dumped on the carpet because I had zero buffer left… and reflecting back that my reaction was just as bad as my toddler’s when I peel the banana “wrong.”

I told myself it was a season. I told myself it was normal.

Every ambitious mom I knew looked like she was doing the same thing.

I kept lowering the bar for what I considered feeling ‘fine.’

Until in reality, I was far from fine. Very far.

If any part of you is thinking, ‘I’m fine, I’m just tired,’ I get it. But could that be a bigger signal?

A Full Life vs an Unsustainable One

Understanding burnout became important to me because it gave me a map.

It helped me stop treating my symptoms like a personal failure and start paying attention to what my body was trying to tell me. It was the first step toward what I now call The Fulfilled State.

And let me be clear: Working hard is not the problem. A 45-hour week might be intense, but it can be normal.

What isn’t normal is needing 60 to 80 hours to keep up.
What isn’t normal is feeling your chest tighten every time an email comes in.
What isn’t normal is living with a nervous system that never powers down.

The Diagnosis That Changed My Outlook

But I only took two days off, then went right back to work. I told people I had the flu. I hated myself for lying. And I hated that lying felt safer than telling the truth.

Because I had my year’s biggest event coming up. Because I was already anxious about telling work I was pregnant.

A few weeks later, strange rashes appeared on my hands.

Then more symptoms. Months of testing, appointments, and uncertainty.

I kept thinking, please don’t let this be real, while also knowing something was already wrong.

While Southern Spain sounds dreamy, once you pair it with hundred-degree temperatures, you quickly realize it is too hot for the beaches to even be enjoyable or even to stand on the sand in the afternoons. You ultimately end up spending your days seeking A/C rather than soaking up the sun.

That is where Northern Spain comes in. The region offers much more moderate temperatures but just as much rich Spanish culture. While San Sebastián gets all the hype (which it certainly deserves), my research today is concentrated on options outside of this charming city.

If you are specifically looking for an elevated, community-driven experience in San Sebastián, Roam Collective is the camp and program to book (I co-founded it). For everything else across the Atlantic coast, here is how to operationalize your summer in Northern Spain.

Logistics: Getting There & Staying There

Ease of Getting There:

• Major Airports: Land in Bilbao (BIO) for the Basque Country, or Santiago de Compostela (SCQ) for Galicia.

• Flights: From the East Coast, you can find 1-stop connections into Bilbao. From the West Coast (Los Angeles, San Francisco, etc.), expect 1-2 stops to reach the Northern hubs.

• The Commute: Reaching the camp cities is relatively easy, but you will want to rent a car, unless selecting a camp in Bilbao proper, which has an incredible Metro system. The Euskotren (in the Basque Country) is clean, efficient, and a great way to skip the car rental for day trips between Bilbao and San Sebastián.

Stroller & Scooter Realism

• Stroller: The sidewalks here are generally excellent and wide. A sturdy “city” stroller works perfectly fine.

• Scooters: Unlike cobblestone cities in Greece or Portugal, Northern Spain is perfect for scooters. The promenades are typically flat, paved, and made for wheels.

Housing

• A 2-bedroom apartment in a family-friendly area like the Abando district in Bilbao ranges from $2,800–$5,000/month in July.

The “American Reality” Check:

• Air Conditioning: Most homes don’t have it because the nights stay so cool. Just open the windows for the sea breeze.

• The Siesta: While the big cities don’t fully shut down, smaller boutiques and pharmacies will close from 2:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

• Laundry: Standalone dryers are rare. Everyone uses the “tendedero” (clothesline or rack).

The Weather: What to Expect in July

• The Temperature: Expect daily highs between 72°F and 80°F. You might get a heatwave that hits the 90s, but it’s rare and never lasts long.

• The Evening Vibe: Perfectly crisp. You will actually want a light jacket at night.

The Northern Spain Food Scene & Typical Schedule

What to Eat:

• Pintxos: The Basque version of tapas. Small bites on bread. It’s perfect for kids because they can see exactly what they are getting before you order.

• Empanada Gallega: Savory meat or tuna pies from Galicia. They are the ultimate “easy lunch” for a beach day.

• Tortilla de Patatas: The North takes their tortilla seriously (especially in Betanzos). It’s a universal kid-favorite.

• Cider & Txakoli: For the parents, the natural cider of Asturias and the effervescent white Txakoli wine of the Basque Country are non-negotiable summer staples.

Typical Eating Schedule:

• Lunch: 2:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. The most important meal.

• The Merienda: 5:30 p.m. snack time. Grab a Churro or a pastry to bridge the gap.

• Dinner: 8:00 p.m. – 10:30 p.m. You won’t find many restaurants open any earlier.

Things to Do With Kids

• San Sebastián: Spend every afternoon at La Concha Beach. The water is calm, and there is a classic carousel right on the promenade.

• Mount Igueldo Amusement Park: Take the vintage funicular up the mountain in San Sebastián for old-school rides with the best view in the city.

• Bilbao: Head to the Guggenheim playground. The slides are world-class and you get to look at the “Puppy” flower sculpture.

• Cabárceno Natural Park (near Santander): A massive safari-style park where animals live in semi-liberty in a stunning karst landscape.

• Cíes Islands (Vigo): Take the ferry for a day trip. It’s restricted to a certain number of visitors per day, so it never feels crowded.

• Aquarium Donostia: One of the best in Spain, with a 360-degree tunnel that kids go crazy for.

• The Itsasmuseum (Maritime Museum): Located right on the Bilbao river, kids can climb on vintage boats and play in the massive outdoor crane-themed area.

Things to Do Without Kids

• Wine Tours: Take a day trip south to La Rioja (only 90 mins from Bilbao) for world-class winery architecture and tastings.

• Boat Days: Charter a boat in the Ría de Vigo to see the mussel farms and anchor at a hidden beach for a seafood lunch.

• The Guggenheim: Actually go inside the museum without a toddler and take your time with the Serra sculptures.

• Azkuna Zentroa (Bilbao): Visit this Philippe Starck-designed cultural center. Grab a glass of wine and look up through the glass-bottomed rooftop pool.

• The Chillida Leku Museum: An open-air sculpture park dedicated to Eduardo Chillida. It is incredibly peaceful and a “must” for art lovers.

• San Juan de Gaztelugatxe: Hike the 241 steps to this island hermitage (famously a Game of Thrones filming site). It is a workout best done without kids in tow.

Local Support

• Sitly: A very popular app in Spain for finding local babysitters and nannies.

• Nannyfy: Vetted, professional childcare that often caters to international travelers.

• Average Rates: Expect to pay €10–€18/hour for a quality, often bilingual, sitter.

Athens, Greece is the first destination I’m publishing that I haven’t actually been to. And if I’m being honest, I have been to Greece, but my one-week spring break in Corfu as a study abroad student barely counts as “seeing Greece.”

That trip was booked for Easter week, which is when the island basically shuts down. Just one of many questionable travel decisions I made in my early twenties.

My one shining Greece moment was Easter lunch with a Greek family at their restaurant. My friend and I were wandering a quiet strip of closed spots, hungry and a little lost, when we stumbled on a family mid feast. Lamb, dishes everywhere, the best smells. I think they took pity on us and invited us to sit down and it was one of the best meals. True story, I swear.

So yes, Greece with our family is high on my bucket list.

And while the islands get all the glory, I was impressed by the camp options in the Athens Riviera and the coastal suburbs for a great summer routine with kids. You get ancient history, beach days, and a culture that truly treats kids like they belong.

One disclaimer if you’re West Coast based like me: the time zone is the hardest part. 9:00 a.m. PDT is 7:00 p.m. in Greece, so overlap can be brutal. But if you can swing the schedule, the payoff is huge.

Here is how to operationalize your Greek summer.

Logistics: Getting There & Staying There

Ease of Getting There:

• Major Airport: Land at Athens International Airport (ATH).

• Flights: Several major U.S. cities offer non-stop flights to Athens, mostly on a seasonal basis (typically March/April through October) if you’re flying from the East Coast. If you’re flying from the West Coast (Los Angeles, San Francisco, Dallas etc.) expect 1-2 stops.

• The Commute: The airport is about 35–45 minutes from the city center or the Athens Riviera via taxi (€40–€55) or the Metro (€9).

Reaching the Camp Hubs: Most of the camps listed below are in the “Athens Riviera” or the northern suburbs.

• To the Coast: You must rent a car. Public transit out here is sparse and slow. These areas are a 45–60 minute drive from central Athens.

• To the North: These are accessible via the Green Line (Metro Line 1) or a 20–30 minute Uber. Many families choose to stay in Kifisia or Halandri to be closer to these school-based camps.

Traveling to the Islands for a Weekend Getaway:

• By Ferry: Most ferries leave from Piraeus (central) or Rafina (closer to the airport/Artemida). Rafina is actually a better bet if you are staying near the coastal camps as it’s smaller and less chaotic.

• By Air: If heading to Crete or Rhodes, a 45-minute flight from ATH is often easier than a 6-hour ferry with kids.

Getting Around: Stroller and Scooters

• The Stroller Strategy: Bring an ultra-compact, one-hand fold model for quick taxi hops, but always keep a carrier handy. Strollers are prohibited on many ruins sites like the Acropolis. If you have a toddler, I highly recommend this toddler sling.

• Scooters: Leave these at home for the hilly, uneven city center and save them only for the flat, wide seaside promenades of the Athens Riviera or the SNFCC park.

• Taxis & Rideshare: Street taxis rarely carry car seats, so pack these compact portable car seat vests.

• Public Transit: Stick to the Metro for the best air conditioning and elevator access, or take the slow, scenic Coastal Tram for a smooth, stroller-friendly ride to the beach.

Cost of Living:

• Housing: A 2-bedroom apartment in a family-friendly area like Kifisia (upscale suburb) or Glyfada (beachfront) ranges from $3,000–$5,500/month in July.

The “American Reality” Check:

• Air Conditioning: This is a survival tool here. Most modern rentals have it, but verify it is in every bedroom, not just the living room.

• Laundry: Clothes dryers are nearly non-existent in Greek homes; instead, lean into the local way and use the drying rack to let the intense Mediterranean sun dry your clothes.

• The Afternoon “Siesta”: Between 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m., the country goes quiet. It is the best time for a family nap or a focused work block.

The Weather: What to Expect in July

• The Temperature: Expect consistent, intense heat with daily highs averaging between 90°F and 95°F, though frequent heatwaves can easily push temperatures into the low 100s.

• The Evening Vibe: As the sun dips, the temperature drops to 75°F, signaling the start of the Greek “second day.” The air becomes perfectly comfortable for outdoor dining and late-night strolls, with a nice coastal breeze.

The Greek Food Scene & Typical Schedule

What to Eat:

• Vegetables: July is the peak of the Greek tomato. Look for Gemista (tomatoes and peppers stuffed with rice and herbs) or Briam (a roasted vegetable medley).

• Fruit: Seek out Argos Melons (rugby-ball shaped and incredibly sweet) and Naoussa Peaches. In late August, keep an eye out for Royal Figs with their dark purple skin.

• Fritter Culture: Kids love Kolokithokeftedes (zucchini fritters) and Tomatokeftedes (tomato fritters). They are essentially crispy, savory snacks that work for any meal.

• The Wine Scene: For hot afternoons, skip the heavy reds and look for Assyrtiko (crisp and mineral) or Moschofilero (floral and dry). If you want something traditional, try a high-quality Retsina served ice-cold.

Typical Eating Schedule:

• Lunch 1:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. This is the big, lingering meal of the day followed by a rest.

• The Evening Coffee: Around 6:00 p.m. Locals often grab a Freddo Espresso to fuel up for the long night ahead.

• Dinner: 9:00 p.m. – 10:30 p.m. Tavernas don’t truly vibe up until late. If you have younger kids, look for “Tascas” or tavernas with outdoor play areas.

Things to Do With Kids

• The Hellenic Cosmos: An interactive museum with virtual reality tours of ancient Greece.

• The Beaches: For calm, toddler-friendly water, head to Varkiza Resort (Yabanaki) or Lagonisi Beach. Both have soft sand and shallow entries. Artemida is also great for shallow water but has a much more local, laid-back vibe.

• The Water Parks: Aquapolis (next to the Attica Zoo in Spata) is the newest and most convenient. For a massive day trip, Splash Waterpark Isthmos (near Corinth) is about 40 minutes from Athens and has huge slides for big kids.

• Farms & Feta: Visit Kostarelos Cheese Factory in Markopoulo. They’ve been making barrel-aged feta since the ‘30s. While it’s more of a production facility/shop, they have a “gastronomic center” where you can see the process and eat the freshest yogurt and cheese imaginable.

• Cooking Classes: Kids Love Greece organizes family-friendly classes that start with a market tour and end with the kids making their own tzatziki and pita.

• Flisvos Marina: A massive pedestrian area with playgrounds, cafes, and great people-watching.

• Lake Vouliagmeni: A natural thermal lake that is calm and shallow, perfect for a relaxed family swim.

• Outdoor Cinemas: A quintessential Greek summer experience. Most gardens show English movies with Greek subtitles.

• Day Trip to Aegina: A 40-minute boat ride. Buy the local pistachios at the port and visit the Temple of Aphaia.

Things to Do Without Kids

• The Rooftop Bars of Monastiraki: Grab a cocktail for a view of the Acropolis that is truly breathtaking.

• Wine & Olives: Take a private tour of the Mesogaia Valley (right near the airport/Koropi). Wineries like Papagiannakos are bioclimatic masterpieces. Pair this with an olive oil tasting at Maison d’Olive in the city for a high-end “adult” afternoon.

• Boat Days: Charter a private rib boat from Vouliagmeni to explore the hidden coves or sail out to the uninhabited Moni Island for turquoise water snorkeling.

• Shopping in Kifisia: Shaded streets, high-end boutiques, and elite brunch spots in the northern suburbs.

• Cape Sounion at Sunset: Drive down to the Temple of Poseidon for the best sunset view on the mainland.

Local Support

• Nannuka: The primary platform in Greece for finding vetted sitters, tutors, and nannies.

• GreekCompass: Specializes in finding English-speaking care for international families.

In the summer of 2024, our family spent 9 weeks living in Sintra, a quaint fairytale-like town about 30 minutes from Lisbon. This wasn’t just a long vacation, it was a full-life relocation. The kids went to summer camp, Jason and I worked, we hiked the Sintra hills, explored the coast, enjoyed vibrant days in Lisbon, and really felt like we were living abroad. There are so many sites to see, day-trips and weekend trips from the south in the Algarve, to farther north in Porto.

Portugal is magic. It’s affordable, the people are kind, the food is incredible and it has undeniable natural beauty that makes it feel like a true reset. Whether you’re looking at the city of Lisbon or the coastal charm of Cascais (my fav. beachside town), here is how to operationalize your Portuguese summer.

Logistics: Getting There & Staying There

Ease of Getting There:

• Major Airports: Land at Lisbon (LIS) or Porto (OPO)

• Flights: Direct flights are standard to Lisbon from major U.S. hubs like New York, Boston, and even San Francisco, typically taking between 7 to 11 hours. TAP is the national airline, and very reasonably priced.

• The Commute: The Lisbon airport is very central. A taxi or Uber/Grab to the city center takes 15–25 minutes (€15–€25)

Getting Around: Stroller vs. Scooter Realism

• Uber & Grab: Uber is incredibly affordable and reliable here, and Grab is even cheaper. It’s often cheaper than taking the whole family on public transit. We packed these compact portable car seat vests for Caden and Willow. They are a must-have in Portugal.

• Skip the Scooters: Between the steep hills and the tiled sidewalks, scooters are more of a hazard than a help.

• The Stroller Strategy: You need a stroller with great suspension for the cobblestones. If you’re in Lisbon, baby-wearing is easier for the steepest neighborhoods. If you have a toddler, I highly recommend this toddler sling.

Cost of Living & Rentals:

• Average 2-Bedroom Rental: A 2-bedroom in a family-friendly area like Estoril or Príncipe Real ranges from $3,500–$6,000/month in July.

• Stocking Up: For a massive initial stock-up, grab a ride-share to an Auchen, a massive Walmart-like supermarket.

The “American Reality” Check:

• Air Conditioning: More common in modern Lisbon apartments, but still rare in older buildings. Check for “Ar Condicionado.”

• Laundry: A very standard European setup: washer in the kitchen, no dryer. Buy a drying rack and let the Atlantic sun do the work.

The Weather: What to Expect in July

• The Temperature: It ranges from 75°F–85°F. It’s rarely “stifling” because of the proximity to the ocean. However, it can definitely get into the mid 90°Fs in July, and Douro Valley can easily be in the 100°Fs

• Evening Vibe: You’ll definitely want a light jacket at night as it can get chilly in the breeze.

The Portugal Food Scene & Typical Schedule

What to Eat:

• Summer Produce: July is the season of figs and stone fruits. Look for the giant, sweet Alentejo Melons and watermelons sold at markets.

• Market Staples: Keep an eye out for Costoluto-style tomatoes and the uniquely sweet zucchine at local mercados.

• Pastel de Nata: You can’t live in Portugal for a summer without a Pastel de Nata ritual. They are the perfect morning snack (lanche da manhã) or 4:00 p.m. bribe for the kids. My son still talks about them!

• Seafood: So much seafood! Order it all!

• The Wine Scene: Everyone knows Port, but for hot summer afternoons, you want Vinho Verde. It’s a “green” (young) wine from the north. It’s crisp, slightly effervescent, and low in alcohol, making it the perfect day-drinking choice.

Typical Eating Schedule:

• Lunch: 12:30 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. Many restaurants offer a Prato do Dia (dish of the day) that includes soup, a main, and coffee for a steal.

• Dinner: 8:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. While some spots open at 7:00 p.m., they will be empty. Locals don’t start showing up until at least 8:00 p.m.. If you have younger kids, look for “Tascas” (casual taverns) where the vibe is loud and nobody cares if your toddler is under the table.

Things to Do With Kids

I cannot stress just how many indoor and outdoor activities there are to do with kids in and around Lisbon, not to mention the many beaches to explore. This is a fraction of my extensive list. Plus Porto and the Algarve have an entire list of things as well. TLDR, this is a sample with Lisbon as your home base, not my full Portugal menu.

• Skip the Tram and do a Tuk Tuk Lisboa tour instead: Seriously, avoid the insane crowds and lines, the tram won’t be enjoyable with kids. Instead opt for a private Tuk Tuk tour instead to see all of Lisbon without little legs getting tired.

• Oceanário de Lisboa: A great urban aquarium to visit in the morning. Walk over to Honest Greens after for a yummy late lunch.

• Cascais Beaches: Take the train from Lisbon to Cascais and spend the day at the beautiful beaches. For older kids there is an inflatable obstacle course in the water to enjoy.

• Pavilhão do Conhecimento: An interactive science museum in Parque das Nações that kids actually want to stay in all day.

• Picnic at Jardim da Estrela: A beautiful park with a great playground and a kiosk cafe for parents to grab a coffee or set up a nice picnic.

• LX Factory: An industrial-chic complex with great shops, art, and rooftop bars. Perfect for a kid-free afternoon.

• Quinta da Regaleira: Travel to fairytale Sintra on the train from Lisbon for a day of exploring. Skip Pena Palace if its not sunny out or (its quite miserable), but definitely visit the spiral staircase regardless of the weather.

Things to Do Without Kids

Same story as above, there are SO MANY things to do and restaurants to try sans kids. This is a small snippet of my favorites.

• Sunset at a “Miradouro”: Head to Miradouro da Graça for a glass of wine and the best sunset view over the red roofs of Lisbon.

• Boat Tour: My favorite way to see the city, enjoy a full morning or afternoon sipping Vino Verde from a boat along the water.

• Sintra Hike: Do the steep hike up to the Castelo dos Mouros without having to carry a toddler. The views are incredible.

• Eat at 2 Michelin Star Alma: For a real, memorable treat, try Alma for new-age Portuguese dishes, or try one of the 38+ one Michelin star dining experiences in Lisbon’s dense concentration of fine dining.

• Wine Tasting in Chiado: Visit a local wine bar to sample Vinho Verde (perfect for summer) or a deep Douro red.

You might not think you’re burned out.
Because you still show up. You still perform. You still get things done.

You’re capable. Reliable. Trusted. You’re the person people count on because you always come through. You’re the mom who packs the lunches, remembers spirit day, schedules the dentist, and still shows up to work prepared. You’re the one who says yes when something needs to get done, even when your calendar is already full.

From the outside, your life looks exactly like the life you’ve worked day in and day out to build.

And that’s what makes this season feel so confusing.

You wanted this life. You built it intentionally. You don’t hate your job. You don’t regret becoming a mom. You’re proud of what you’ve created. In many ways, you genuinely love your life.

You just don’t feel fully like yourself inside it anymore.

Motherhood changes us fast. Faster than we expect. We step into it and keep going, often without stopping to take stock of how different we are than we were before. There’s an unspoken pressure to keep performing the same way we always have, with the same energy, the same availability, the same drive, even when our lives have fundamentally shifted.

Somewhere along the way, being capable turned into being constantly available. Being ambitious turned into being endlessly accommodating. You became very good at holding everything together, sometimes at the cost of listening to your own limits.

You kept climbing. You kept achieving. And it often came with more stress, more pressure, sometimes even anxiety you didn’t expect or recognize at first.

And you keep adapting.

At the start of every year, you feel that familiar pull. This will be the year you’re more present. More intentional. More in control of your time. You make plans. You set boundaries. You genuinely mean it.

Then life happens.

A sick kid. A school email. A deadline that moves up. A season that asks more of you than you expected. Little by little, intention gives way to autopilot. Not because you don’t care, but because everyone needs you and it feels easier to adjust yourself than disappoint someone else.

There’s guilt in wanting something to change when your life looks good. Gratitude and confusion coexist, and it can be hard to explain that without feeling dramatic.

But this isn’t about choosing between being a present mom and building a life that lights you up. It’s not about blowing things up or starting over. It’s about realizing that the chapter you’re in is different from the one you planned for.

If you’re honest, the questions you’re circling aren’t “what’s wrong with me?”

They’re quieter. More grounded.

Who am I now?
What actually lights me up in this season?
And how do I build what’s next without abandoning myself in the process?

These aren’t signs that something is broken.
They’re signals that you’ve outgrown a version of your life that once fit, and you’re ready to build one that fits who you are now.

This is the work at the heart of The Fulfilled State.

We were sitting in the escrow office, signing our names on what felt like a never-ending stack of documents to finalize the acquisition of our first studio - MNTSTUDIO Palo Alto.

Excited? Yes.

Terrified? Also yes.

We left the office and drove straight to the studio. Opened the door. Walked in. It was ours: The reformers. The retail shelves. The team.

I looked around and felt like I had stepped into the middle of my own dream. But I also felt like a complete fraud.

I didn’t know the backend systems. I didn’t know how to manage a front-desk team or teach a Pilates class.

I had several moments where I thought, “What did we just get ourselves into?”

But I knew something else too: We would figure it out.

Because making sh!t happen with an imperfect plan is my superpower.

For as long as I can remember, once I see a vision, I can’t not act on it.

In my tech career, I built a reputation for taking big, abstract ideas and breaking them down into actionable steps that a team could move on fast.

And the reason I am able to do that, whether it was walking into boardrooms I didn’t feel qualified to be in, or signing a 6,000 sq ft lease for a space I had never seen IRL, is because I move even when I’m unsure.

It’s not the work itself. It’s the decisions. The constant delegation. The recurring calendar clean-up. The birthday RSVPs and missing soccer cleats and “do we need a new air filter?” kind of mental clutter that chips away at your focus every day.

If you don’t have an EA at work, how many times have you caught yourself thinking how nice that must be? And even if you do, most can’t actually help with the stuff that takes up real estate in your brain at home.

This fall, I ran an experiment: Could I buy back that bandwidth?

I tested two platforms, Faye and Duckbill, both built to do exactly that. On the surface, they appear similar. But I wanted to see how they hold up in real life. And while I was offered free trials to test both platforms, this review is entirely based on my experience using them to manage the chaos of everyday life.

Both have graciously extended extra discounts for my community (scroll to the bottom for codes).

I also had the chance to meet members of both teams and want to start by acknowledging the founders: Meghan Joyce of Duckbill and Emily King of Faye, two ambitious moms who saw a massive gap in support and decided to build something to fix it. Having the idea is one thing. Taking action on it is a whole different game. We can all learn something from both of them.

TLDR: Both platforms are valuable. But for very different reasons.

If you’re considering outsourcing some of your mental load this year (and I think you should), here’s my honest comparison of Duckbill vs. Faye, broken down into four categories that actually matter.

1. Task Scope & Execution

Faye: Feels like hiring a smart, high-EQ personal assistant

This is hands-on, human, nuanced support. From day one, I was matched with a dedicated Family Advisor. They aim to match you with someone in or near your region, which helps with things like restaurant recs, local kids’ activities, and in some markets where advisors are literally in your neighborhood, they can do in person tasks like returns or gift wrapping.

She very much owned that “I’m here to help you” mentality. She remembered things I didn’t even expect her to keep track of. One week she texted:

“I see some fun spirit days coming up on the calendar for Willow! Does she have everything she needs for those days?”

That level of thoughtfulness, the kind that’s proactive, not reactive, is very valuable.

Real Faye tasks I submitted:

• Researched and signed up my daughter for dance lessons

• Planned my birthday dinner: booked the venue and handled menu selections

• Researched and booked a kids’ birthday party venue

• Uploaded and organized destination research in Wanderlog (my preferred travel app) for upcoming travel

• Planned a weekend of kid-friendly activities during a trip

• Found and booked Pilates classes while we were out of town

• Paid outstanding medical bills on my behalf

• Helped with data entry in Sheets for my business

• Listed a pair of shoes on Poshmark, including account setup, pricing, listing, and comment management

What stood out: This wasn’t just about efficiency. It was about connection, personalization and continuity. She knew my preferences (or asked clarifying questions) and was often one step ahead of me. Also important to note, your Faye Advisor CAN help with business related tasks (to an extent, i.e. office furniture research, client gifts, team event planning, vendor research, but she isn’t an accountant).

Duckbill: The dispatch desk for your life

Duckbill feels like a “platform” rather than a personal, relationship-based assistant. You don’t know who’s working on your task. That’s the point.

You submit a request in the app, “Bill” (their AI) steps in immediately with clarifying questions to get all your preferences laid out, and then someone executes. No relationship-building. No memory. Just output.

Real Duckbill tasks I submitted:

• Found a medical specialist who accepted my insurance

• Researched and booked after-school activities for my son

• Helped with kids’ birthday party planning:

  • Sourced decorations

  • Found materials for a themed craft

  • Secured a rental generator

  • Purchased party favors

• Made hard-to-get dinner reservations in Europe

• Researched and booked a hotel for a trip

• Booked summer camps

• Scheduled swim lessons

• Submitted a claim for flight delay compensation

• Created a list of Michelin restaurants for an upcoming trip

• Calendared… a lot. Added school events, sports, social events, and trip details across multiple calendars

What stood out: Efficiency! Tasks that I would’ve put off for weeks got handled within 24–48 hours without me needing to engage further. Ones that required follow up i.e. a dinner reservation that only opened 30 days in advance, they set internal reminders and followed up on promptly without me needing to remind them. And the endless, free calendaring was REALLY helpful (like way more helpful than I realized, and I missed it once I stopped using the platform). Important to note Duckbill cannot do business-related requests.

2. Ease of Use

Faye: Feels like texting your COO

You kick off with a 1:1 onboarding call with your Faye Advisor (this does count against your time). You communicate directly with your Family Advisor by text, voice note, email, phone or Faye’s app (both desktop or mobile).

Over time, your advisor learns what you like and how you think. You spend less and less time giving instructions.

⚠️ You do need to watch your hours.
I’ve found myself wondering if a 3-email back-and-forth was worth the 15 minutes it logged. Time does go by fast. That mental math can create a bit of hesitation about whether to ask for support, especially on smaller plans.

Duckbill: Fast, structured, no-nonsense

You submit a task through the app or by forwarding an email. The AI asks questions immediately, filling in the gaps. Then the right person on their team picks it up.

They’re not pretending to be a personal, know your life story, type of assistant. They just get it done.

⚠️ Which means… no one remembers you. Every task is a blank slate. That works great for clean admin, but requires you to be way more specific up front for tasks that require context or tone (like gifting for your husband or meeting your ‘only pink dress” phase kid’s summer wardrobe refresh shopping).

3. Privacy & Customization

Faye: Feels like a family office

• Your advisor is background-checked and U.S.-based

• You build a secure Family Hub with allergies, sizes, travel preferences, service vendors, etc.

• Sensitive info (passports, SSNs, garage codes) is stored in a hidden “vault”

• The customization comes from continuity. The longer you work together, the more she can do without re-confirming details

Duckbill: Secure and systemized

• No consistent person = no long-term memory

• Tasks are completed by a rotating team based on availability and expertise

• Unclear where these behind-the-scenes humans are actually based

• You can submit sensitive info for specific tasks, but it’s not stored unless you request it

• The privacy policy is standard for tech start-ups

4. Cost

This is where the two platforms diverge most, not just in price, but in how value is measured.

Faye (hour-based)

An annual investment at 8/hrs a month (which is optimal IMO) is nearly $3600. At the lowest tier an annual investment is roughly $2000.

You’re billed based on how long each task takes. Those proactive reminders and syncs to check-in count against your hours. The longer your list or the more complex the ask, the faster those hours disappear.

✅ Great if you want a thought partner

🚫 Less ideal if you have lots of fast-moving admin tasks

Tasks timing can be expected as:

• Short (15–30 min): Flower delivery, dinner reservations, gift buying, appointment rescheduling

• Medium (30–60 min): Registering kids for sports, booking travel, handyman research

• Long (1 hr+): Vacation itinerary planning, party coordination, ongoing meal planning

Duckbill (task-based)

An annual investment at the Household plan (which is optimal IMO) is roughly $2000, which is the same investment level at Faye’s lowest tier. At the lowest tier an annual investment is about $1200 - an excellent value!

You don’t track time, you just submit. Each task is classified (free to XL), and credits are deducted accordingly. I never found myself hesitating to use Duckbill the way I sometimes did with Faye, BUT Duckbill’s credit system leaves a lot up for interpretation and you really don’t know how the credits will land in weight until you submit the task.

✅ More affordable entry point for casual users

🚫 Can feel unclear if you don’t know how your tasks will be sized

Tasks are categorized as:

• Free: Calendar sync, AI research

• Small: Gift ideas, schedule car service

• Medium: Book home services, submit nanny hours

• Large: Book medical appointments across providers

• XL: Hire a night nurse, coordinate a move, event planning

So which is right for you?

If you’re ready to buy back time, not just for errands but for clarity, focus, and headspace, you can’t go wrong with either. But they serve different needs and work styles.

Here’s a real-world litmus test based on how you think and what you need:

My personal take

Start with the lowest tier on either platform you select for your first month. Use it as an experiment. It takes a little time to build the muscle of delegation and to figure out what kind of help actually makes your life easier.

Which do I use? I actually have a full-time Chief of Staff for New Modern Mom that also does personal admin (and lends a hand occasionally on my other businesses). I truly could not do all that I do without her. For this reason, I’m fully staffed with this type of support at the moment. That said, on months where I know I may be maxing out her time with more critical work-related items, I 100% would onboard either platform to help me, depending on the type of support I need for that season.
